“I Played It Better At Home”/Effective Practicing

“I played it better at home”.  How often I have heard that from students and said it myself.  Often this statement isn’t exactly true.  Most likely you (and I) didn’t notice what went wrong or didn’t know what to do about it.  However, when performing, what we are not doing well stands out like a bright red nose!

Nancy O’Neill Breth has developed a guide to help you practice more effectively  Today and in the next few weeks i am going to give you some of her practice tips.  Let’s start with PACT.

1. Patience-Learning to play the piano can’t be done in a hurry.  It takes time-every day, week and over the years.  Set aside a portion of each day for practicing and keep the appointment faithfully.

2.  Awareness-LISTEN so carefully that you know exactly how you sound

3.  Curiosity-Ask yourself questions.  How did that sound?  Was it better than before?  If so, how?  If not, why not?  Should i slow it down, change what I am doing?

4. Tunnel Vision-Set a specific goal for each practice session.  focus on one problem at a time.  Work in small sections.  Even within a section, work on one hand (or one musical line) at a time or on one aspect only, such as accuracy, speed, balance, dynamics and tone quality

I hope this helps.  More next week.

Organizing Daily Piano Practice

To build muscle strength and coordination, piano students “train” every day by practicing.  I ask parents to assist them in these ways:

  1. Scheduling: In September of each school year, I talk to each student about how much they realistically feel they can practice and I write it down in their Student Music Organizer.  You also should sit down with your child and make a daily practice schedule together. Write down specific times for each day’s session. Divide the practicing into sections if you like. Morning practice gets the best results, so schedule some practice before school if at all possible. Post this schedule near the piano.
  2. Environment: During practice time, keep the room quiet. Do not allow phone calls, friends, siblings, TV or other distractions.
  3. Supervision: Parents who do not actually sit with the student during practice time should read the Weekly Lesson Assignment in their Student Music Organizer. If you don’t understand what I expect for a lesson, ask your child to explain it to you. If the student doesn’t understand it, call me. Make sure each item on the assignment sheet is covered.
  4. Instrument:  Last but not least, each student needs a good instrument to practice on.  This means an acoustic piano (ideally), an electric piano or a keyboard with a minimum of four octaves, weighted keys (keys that respond to touch and have loud and soft sounds depending on the weight and speed of touch applied), and a pedal.

I hope this helps and I look forward to a successful and fun musical year!!

Fall Piano Lessons/Labour Day Weekend

Hello to all of my students and their families and welcome to the last weekend of the summer :( .   I recognize that I have not been blogging regularly, mostly due to the fact that I was on holiday with my family in Thunder Bay.  I have included some pictures for you to enjoy.  The scenery is and always was, beautiful and luckily for me, the weather was perfect.

I am looking forward to a new year.  Fall term begins on Tuesday September 6.  If you have not done so already, please fill out the Student Policy Form and Student Information Form so I have updated contact information and I know that you understand and agree to my Studio Policies.

Next week will be busy,  but fun and I look forward to connecting with all of you again.

Have a great long weekend!

Spring Exam Comments Available and a Walk For Ovarian Cancer

A note to all of my students who played exams in the spring.  Comments on their performances during the exams can now be accessed by going to www.rcmexaminations.org.  Just enter your RCM number.

My apologies for missing my blog last Friday but I was in Southampton visiting my good friend Jane.  Jane has been battling ovarian cancer for 7 years now and is an inspiration to all who know her. This year I am participating in the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope on Team Jane where we are striving to detect ovarian cancer early.

Currently there is no early detection screening test for ovarian cancer. This means that 70% of women do not survive longer than 5 years because they are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease.  If we were able to detect the disease early, the survival rate would dramatically increase to 90%.

Therefore, any support that you are able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

The funds raised go directly to:
- support programs
- awareness and education initiatives
- research.

Secure online donations can be made with your credit card and an official charitable tax receipt will be sent to you by email. Please click on the link below to make a difference:

Have a Wonderful Long Weekend

The people who attended the Click Camp Summer Session will have or will be shortly receiving the DVD of their projects. Lauren and I would appreciate feedback from the students and their parents. The survey is available under the forms section of this web site. Our Fall flyer will be distributed the first week of September, so you can choose which PD days you may like to join us.

I would appreciate it if parents and students could fill out their Fall Lesson Request Form also found under the forms section .  If you want the same time slot, please let me know.

Last weekend I attended a teacher’s seminar at the Royal conservatory of Music on Creativity and Teaching. I think the most important thing I learned was that anyone can make music and that it should be fun!!  More about this next week…I am off to the beach!!

Summer Click Camp / The Transformative Power of Music

The summer has been fabulous so far and I hope everyone has been enjoying it.  Lauren Schaffer and I are hostessing the summer version of our Click Camp Workshops.  They begin on Monday and we have 14 registrants and lots of talented staff and volunteers.  I will post some of our projects as soon as I can.

An interesting article in the Tuesday July 5 issue of the Globe and Mail .  Go to the Education section and when you get  there type in  “The Transformational Power of Music”.  El Sistema is a “wildly successful Venezuelan initiative that offers instruments and lessons to thousands of children, most from impoverished families”.  The premise of the article is that if we teach children the beauty of music…the music will teach them the beauty of life. There is a growing belief that the cognitive benefits of music are large but that the social and emotional benefits are just as large if not more so.  Epidemiologists at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto want to evaluate the program’s benefits by tracking the program that is expected to start in Toronto in the Fall.

Very cool program..much needed information!!

Happy Canada Day!!

Summer is finally here and I plan on celebrating Canada Day by painting my front door and then heading down to Woodbine Park for the Red White and Vinyl Festival.  Check details at Vinyl953.com.  Dan Hill, Brass Transit, Alannah Myles, Andy Kim and Lighthouse…I love Alannah Myles and Lighthouse..two of my favourites.  I hope to see you there !!!  Have a wonderful long weekend.

Lauren and I still have some room in the second week of our Click Camp (July18-22) so if you don’t have anything planned, consider joining us for a week of music video creating.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH SOME MUSICAL TREASURES !!!

GOOD NEWS!  Most  of the marks for piano exams from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto have been published  and everyone passed…lots with Honours so congratulations to everyone for meeting their goals  and performing so well.

Just a note that each student who has registered with the Royal Conservatory will receive an RCM number and a confirmation number.  The confirmation number changes, but the RCM number should be recorded for safekeeping as this number will stay with the student for the rest of her/his life.  I still have mine and can look up exams and marks as far back as I want to..which in my case..is “far back”.

School is out next week and for any students who may travel to Calgary may want to visit the Cantos Music Foundation. “With more than 700 items, from harpsichords to synthesizers…(the foundation) is becoming a popular stop for musicians touring to Calgary….”  Globe and Mail, June 23, 2011. They have interesting items in their arsenal such as Elton John’s original piano and a Novachord which is from 1939 and looks like a piano but plays like an organ.  It is often considered to be the world’s first commercial polyphonic synthesizer

A quick reminder to sign up for Summer Lessons and Fall Lessons. Also please read my Studio Policies and submit that you have read and agreed to them. Have a great weekend!

Piano Lessons and Why Summer Vacation Should Be Shorter

The first few years I taught piano, I simply closed down shop during the summer.  It suited me fine as I had small children and quite frankly, I enjoyed the time off.  However, within a few years I noticed that each Fall I was having to re-teach my young students.  So much of their piano learning had been lost over the summer.  I soon came to the realization that to save parents money and my time and energy level, it would be wise to offer lessons during the summer, at least on a part-time basis.  The results were astounding.  Those who either practiced diligently without me over the summer or came to a few lessons, fared much better in the Fall.  We could move on with the learning.  Now there is talk in the Globe and Mail this week about having a shorter summer break to “help alleviate the effect of vacation on students’ learning.  Read more about this in the Globe and Mail under Time To Lead:  Does a shorter summer pass the test?
