Rehearsal !! Hallowe’en Concert Reminder

A short blog to remind you that rehearsal for our Hallowe’en concert will take place at Queen Street East Presbyterian Church at 4:00-5:00. The piano performance students who are playing the group songs need to attend in order to participate the day of the concert.

I have donations of cupcakes and a fruit tray so far and would welcome more volunteers and donations of food and treats to make this day a success.

Our Hallowe’en Concert and After Party!!

On Saturday October 29 from 3:00 until 5:00, Colour Outside The Lines Music Centre will be  hosting its Annual Hallowe’en Concert and after party. This concert is the first concert for  my  new students and is for the students participating, their siblings, and parent volunteers.

Everyone should wear a costume and bring their music with them.  When you arrive, you and your brothers or sisters will be making your own pizza with whatever toppings you choose.  Then we will have our concert while the pizzas are being cooked.  Following the concert we will have a pizza lunch and will play 3 games…bobbing for apples, drop the witches teeth and end with, grabbing the candy out of the witches’ bowl without being caught….!!!???

Rehearsal for this concert will take place on Saturday October 22 at 4:00 and will be one hour long. Students who are performing   the Hallowe’en music we devised as a group during our last Performance  Class particularly need to attend this rehearsal.

From parents, I need donations of juice, water, fruit and vegetable trays and Hallowe’en treats or desserts.  Could you please e-mail me or let me know at your child’s lesson within the next two weeks, what you would like to contribute.  I could also use volunteers to help with games and serving pizza…The pizza dough and toppings are my Hallowe’en treat for the students. Please remember that the siblings of the students are also welcome to attend the concert and party afterwards.:)

His name is James Clark and he is Number 22.  he plays for Concordia University. The game schedule is posted there..one on Friday night and one on Saturday…tune in for more..Proud mom basketball pictures will be available next week.

Next week I will let you know about the theory classes I am offering beginning in November.  The start date and schedule will depend on the level the student needs/wants to achieve.

Practice Tips For Beginners

I seem to have missed posting my blog yesterday.  The time just seems to fly by.  As I have been getting deeper and deeper into practice suggestions, it occurred to me that I have not given any tips to the very early learner..the beginner.

Immediately after the first lesson, I suggest the following be considered and done:

1.  How should the piece sound? Two choices: loud or soft (forte and piano are the musical terms)

2. Which keys am I using? (Three choices for beginners..Two black keys, three black keys or White keys)

3. What is the counting?  This is very important as I want the students to feel the rhythm and GIVE UP COUNTING as soon as possible for each piece of music that they tackle.  How?  Just do the following.

3.a. point at each note and say the rhythm.

3.b. clap the rhythm and feel it

3.c.Play the piece of music!!!  How does it feel and sound?

More to come next blog!!

More Practice Tips!

During last  Friday’s blog I wrote about THE PACT…when practicing…patience, awareness, curiosity and tunnel vision.  This week I want you to have a look at THE BIG PICTURE.  Start by writing measure numbers at the beginning of each line of music if the score does not already contain them.   The following tips will help you practice more efficiently

Sections:  Look and discover the music’s overall structure .  Label each section with a capital letter.  If two sections are alike, use the same letter.

Form:  With the help of your teacher, you should be able to name the form of the piece.

Similarities:  Composers often repeat entire measures, phrases or even sections.  These Repetitions could form a large part of your piece.  Find the repetitions in your score and mark them.  You can skip practicing this material until you put the piece together later.

Differences: Compare sections that look the same and mark the exact spots here one differs form the other.

Terms: Buy a music dictionary and look up any terms that you do not understand and write them on your music.

Keep focused and keep practicing.  Use you precious time wisely.

“I Played It Better At Home”/Effective Practicing

“I played it better at home”.  How often I have heard that from students and said it myself.  Often this statement isn’t exactly true.  Most likely you (and I) didn’t notice what went wrong or didn’t know what to do about it.  However, when performing, what we are not doing well stands out like a bright red nose!

Nancy O’Neill Breth has developed a guide to help you practice more effectively  Today and in the next few weeks i am going to give you some of her practice tips.  Let’s start with PACT.

1. Patience-Learning to play the piano can’t be done in a hurry.  It takes time-every day, week and over the years.  Set aside a portion of each day for practicing and keep the appointment faithfully.

2.  Awareness-LISTEN so carefully that you know exactly how you sound

3.  Curiosity-Ask yourself questions.  How did that sound?  Was it better than before?  If so, how?  If not, why not?  Should i slow it down, change what I am doing?

4. Tunnel Vision-Set a specific goal for each practice session.  focus on one problem at a time.  Work in small sections.  Even within a section, work on one hand (or one musical line) at a time or on one aspect only, such as accuracy, speed, balance, dynamics and tone quality

I hope this helps.  More next week.

Organizing Daily Piano Practice

To build muscle strength and coordination, piano students “train” every day by practicing.  I ask parents to assist them in these ways:

  1. Scheduling: In September of each school year, I talk to each student about how much they realistically feel they can practice and I write it down in their Student Music Organizer.  You also should sit down with your child and make a daily practice schedule together. Write down specific times for each day’s session. Divide the practicing into sections if you like. Morning practice gets the best results, so schedule some practice before school if at all possible. Post this schedule near the piano.
  2. Environment: During practice time, keep the room quiet. Do not allow phone calls, friends, siblings, TV or other distractions.
  3. Supervision: Parents who do not actually sit with the student during practice time should read the Weekly Lesson Assignment in their Student Music Organizer. If you don’t understand what I expect for a lesson, ask your child to explain it to you. If the student doesn’t understand it, call me. Make sure each item on the assignment sheet is covered.
  4. Instrument:  Last but not least, each student needs a good instrument to practice on.  This means an acoustic piano (ideally), an electric piano or a keyboard with a minimum of four octaves, weighted keys (keys that respond to touch and have loud and soft sounds depending on the weight and speed of touch applied), and a pedal.

I hope this helps and I look forward to a successful and fun musical year!!

Fall Piano Lessons/Labour Day Weekend

Hello to all of my students and their families and welcome to the last weekend of the summer :( .   I recognize that I have not been blogging regularly, mostly due to the fact that I was on holiday with my family in Thunder Bay.  I have included some pictures for you to enjoy.  The scenery is and always was, beautiful and luckily for me, the weather was perfect.

I am looking forward to a new year.  Fall term begins on Tuesday September 6.  If you have not done so already, please fill out the Student Policy Form and Student Information Form so I have updated contact information and I know that you understand and agree to my Studio Policies.

Next week will be busy,  but fun and I look forward to connecting with all of you again.

Have a great long weekend!

Spring Exam Comments Available and a Walk For Ovarian Cancer

A note to all of my students who played exams in the spring.  Comments on their performances during the exams can now be accessed by going to www.rcmexaminations.org.  Just enter your RCM number.

My apologies for missing my blog last Friday but I was in Southampton visiting my good friend Jane.  Jane has been battling ovarian cancer for 7 years now and is an inspiration to all who know her. This year I am participating in the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope on Team Jane where we are striving to detect ovarian cancer early.

Currently there is no early detection screening test for ovarian cancer. This means that 70% of women do not survive longer than 5 years because they are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease.  If we were able to detect the disease early, the survival rate would dramatically increase to 90%.

Therefore, any support that you are able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

The funds raised go directly to:
- support programs
- awareness and education initiatives
- research.

Secure online donations can be made with your credit card and an official charitable tax receipt will be sent to you by email. Please click on the link below to make a difference:
